Agreement signed between the Università Mediterranea and the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas: the port of Vibo will become a Green Port

In the last few days an agreement has been signed between the Mediterranean University Department of Engineering DICEAM, with the natural laboratory of maritime engineering NOEL and the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. Present at the signing were the President of the ADSP Andrea Agostinelli, the Rector of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria prof. Giuseppe Zimbalatti, the Director of DICEAM prof. Giuseppe Barbaro, prof. Felice Arena, the scientific responsible for the agreement and the staff involved in the agreement.

The agreement provides an important contribution to the development of the Port of Vibo Valentia, which is part of the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. Specifically, preparatory studies will be carried out for the construction of the extension of the breakwater of the port of Vibo with REWEC3 type caissons, to harness the energy of the sea waves. The extension of the breakwater is already included in the planning of the port of Vibo Valentia.

REWEC3 caissons are an invention of Prof. Paolo Boccotti, Emeritus of the Mediterranean University and founder of the NOEL laboratory. The study will see a possible application of an idea born and developed in a laboratory of the Mediterranea, the NOEL, in an important port of Calabria.

Considering the energy that it will be possible to produce from the waves of the sea, the port of Vibo Valentia will become a Green Port, capable, that is, of producing internally the energy necessary for the port's operation, using a totally renewable energy source, the waves of the sea.

The agreement is part of the framework programme agreement signed a month ago by President Agostinelli and Rector Zimbalatti, for cooperation between the Mediterranea and the Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas.
