Reggio Calabria experiments with a new way of teaching architecture.

MedASA Summer School, the advanced school of the Mediterraneo, starts

An international project between training, research on public space: focus on climate risk and urban soil

An intensive, experimental, international teaching and research program.

It is called MedASA – Mediterranean Advanced School of Architecture , and it is the new school of advanced architecture promoted by the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, Department of Architecture and Design dAeD   together with the Federico II of Naples , as part of the TNE (Transnational Education) project supported by the PNRR.

The course, which starts on July 1, 2025, is aimed at a selected group of students and young designers from the Mediterraneo, and is structured in blended mode (50% online, 50% in person), with masterclasses and field activities , for a total of 500 hours.

Prof. Marina Tornatora, UNIRC

Prof. Federica Visconti, UNINA

Architecture, climate and city: the project starts from the ground

The course topic is SS_SPAZIO SUOLO , a module dedicated to the design of public space in relation to environmental risks.

Cities are increasingly exposed to extreme phenomena but often planning continues to ignore the soil as an active resource. The goal is to reverse this approach and work on concrete solutions for urban adaptation.

The ground is not only a surface to be built on, but an ecological infrastructure, a water absorber, a place for mobility and relationships. And above all, it is part of the public space: hence the choice to address the issues of climate mitigation starting from squares, parks, and urban voids.

Between teaching and experimentation

MedASA presents itself as an educational , experimental and interdisciplinary laboratory , with the involvement of architects, urban planners, sociologists, environmental experts and infrastructure designers. The program combines design research with technical tools, offering participants training oriented to practice and the real transformation of urban contexts.

A network in the Mediterraneo

MedASA is part of the SULIEIA project , coordinated by Federico II of Naples, which involves academic partners in the Balkans (Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro).
The international and multilateral approach is not only an organizational element, but an integral part of the didactic vision: working between different contexts, on shared problems, is essential today to think about the future of cities.
