AgrariaUniRC in the World's Top 2% Scientists 2025 ranking

Stanford University (USA) has published the report “Top 2% Scientists of the world (2025)”, which has now become an eagerly awaited annual event.

The report was prepared by a team of experts led by Professor John Ioannidis, a distinguished professor at Stanford University. Using key bibliometric indicators up to December 2024 (total number of citations, h-index, number of articles published as a single author, number of citations for articles published as a single author, number of articles published as a first author, number of citations for articles published as a first author, number of articles published as a last author, number of citations for articles published as a last author) and the SCOPUS database, the team objectively measured the impact of publications and, therefore, scientific research on the global scientific community. The report includes two rankings: one based on the scientific achievements of scientists in the previous calendar year (2024) and one based on their career achievements.

Essentially, first a general ranking of the scientific results of scientists from around the world was drawn up simultaneously for all disciplinary fields. Then, from this, the names of the scientists who placed in the top 2% of this ranking were extrapolated – that is, those who achieved the best results (the “Top 2%”), first for a single year and then for their career.

In 2025, five professors from the Department of AGRICULTURE at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria were included in the first ranking (single year), thus falling among the scientists who have most influenced the global scientific community in 2024. They are, in order of appearance in the ranking: Professor Demetrio Antonio Zema, Associate Professor for the Agricultural Hydraulics and Hydraulic-Forestry Systems sector, Professor Angelo Maria Giuffrè, Associate Professor for the Food Science and Technology sector, Professor Adele Muscolo, Full Professor of Agricultural Chemistry, Professor Leonardo Schena, Full Professor of Plant Pathology, and Professor Orlando Campolo, Associate Professor of General and Applied Entomology.

Prof. Angelo Maria Giuffrè, Associate Professor in the Food Science and Technology sector (also first in terms of career results at his home university), and Prof. Demetrio Antonio Zema, Associate Professor in the Agricultural Hydraulics and Hydraulic-Forestry Systems sector, placed favorably in the career rankings.

The Department of Agriculture is proud of this prestigious recognition of excellence, a testament to commitment, dedication, skill, and expertise. It hopes it will inspire other colleagues to consolidate the Department of Agriculture in Reggio Calabria's position in the global arena of leading research. This achievement is especially valuable for students, who also interact with faculty members who are key players in international research.
