The working day "Sustainable development of railway corridors" will be held on December 1, 2025 at the Department of Excellence in Information, Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Engineering (DIIES) of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.

This is the final event to present the research results, organized as part of the activities of the "Rail Transport - Spoke 4" thematic area of the National Center for Sustainable Mobility (MOST), funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The research, coordinated by the DIIES Department, with Intesa San Paolo, SRM-Studi, Ricerche e Mezzogiorno, and Sapienza University of Rome, focused on the analysis and evaluation of sustainable rail corridors for passenger and freight mobility. Specifically, the research addressed the planning and design of new high-speed rail infrastructure and services; the study of passenger mobility demand between cities and freight transport with reference to ports; the sustainability analysis of construction, maintenance, and materials use in the railway sector; the analysis of Italian trade flows to and from European countries in relation to transport modes with lower environmental impact; and the analysis of the railway infrastructure endowment of Italian ports, identifying the main critical issues.

The topics covered were analyzed in relation to emerging technologies, energy issues, and the sustainability goals set by the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The potential economic, social, and territorial cohesion impacts of major transport infrastructure in Calabria and Sicily, such as the high-speed rail line and the stable connection across the Strait of Messina, require further scientific and applied exploration.

The experience of DIIES researchers in the transportation area, led by Professor Francesco Russo, at the National Center for Sustainable Mobility (MOST) has proven to be an opportunity to develop cross-disciplinary research, integrating theories and technological tools. Collaboration between research and industry will address current and future challenges related to sustainable development from an economic, social, and environmental perspective, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
