The Department of Agriculture leads the scientific monitoring of urban greenery for the Catanzaro TreeLab project.
The Municipality of Catanzaro officially presented the Catanzaro TreeLab project at Palazzo Fazzari , a cutting-edge initiative for the sustainable management of the city's tree population. The scientific core of the project lies in a strategic collaboration with the Department of Agriculture at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria , which will provide its excellent expertise to transform greenery maintenance into a model of technical precision.
Thanks to the direct involvement of the Degree Program in Forestry and Environmental Sciences , the Department of Agriculture in Reggio Calabria will apply advanced diagnostic methodologies and biomechanical analyses to assess tree health and stability. The objective is twofold: to prevent risks to public safety and to optimize management interventions through rigorous scientific foundations.
Department Director Marco Poiana emphasized the importance of the connection between academia and the local community: " The TreeLab project represents a concrete example of collaboration between institutions and universities. We will make available to the city the expertise and research capabilities developed over years of academic activity to contribute to the protection and proper management of the urban tree heritage."
Professor Andrea R. Proto , professor of tree stability diagnostics and assessment, spoke on the technical and training aspects : "Tree management in cities requires advanced diagnostic technologies. With TreeLab, we will establish a permanent laboratory for technology transfer and training, structurally involving students and young technicians in the rigorous application of monitoring protocols."
In addition to research, the project stands out for its educational value: the Department of Agriculture of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria will coordinate the field activities, which will also involve students from the "Vittorio Emanuele II" Agricultural Technical Institute, creating a direct bridge between theoretical study and professional practice in the management of public green spaces.
