The new road system at the University Campus of Reggio Calabria has been inaugurated.

A strategic connection between the city's road network and the Departments of Engineering and Agriculture. A long-awaited project has been completed. 

The inauguration represents the culmination of a long administrative and planning process. The project was funded under the so-called "Reggio Decree" (Law No. 246/1989), one of the extraordinary instruments designed for the infrastructure development of the Reggio Calabria area.

The new road system for the University Campus of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria has been inaugurated: a strategic infrastructure that directly connects the urban road network to the University Campus, improving accessibility, safety, and usability of the campus and the surrounding area.

The new road completes Via Zehender, connects Viale della Libertà with the Engineering Departments, and connects directly with the road leading to the Department of Agriculture. The route, approximately 500 meters long, provides an alternative route to Via Vito Inferiore, helping to alleviate its significant traffic load.

The project also promotes more sustainable mobility, facilitating pedestrian, bicycle, and public transport travel, and includes the creation of 140 parking spaces, specifically designed to improve the usability of the Engineering complex.

The project will also benefit the many families living in the area, who will be able to reach their homes more easily.

The value of the infrastructure goes beyond its function as a road link. The project is part of a broader project to revitalize the University Campus, aimed, among other things, at strengthening its integration with the urban context, making it easier for students, faculty, technical and administrative staff, and visitors to move around.

The new road system is part of a broader vision for the growth of the Mediterranea. The University Master Plan, recently adopted by the governing bodies, outlines several development scenarios aimed at enhancing the relationship between the University and the City, from a functional, social, and environmental perspective.

The result achieved is the fruit of a shared effort aimed at completing the urbanization and university construction works begun since the University's establishment in 1982.

A long and complex process, marked by operational difficulties, interruptions, and subsequent attempts at recovery, which in recent years has seen a decisive acceleration leading to today's completion of the work.

"The inauguration of this project, valued at approximately €6 million," stated Rector Giuseppe Zimbalatti, "represents the achievement of a goal we have pursued with determination over the years. The new road system significantly improves accessibility to our departments and demonstrates the University's ability to complete strategic interventions for the local area, leveraging public resources resulting from long-term planning.

Nava, who, along with Invitalia technicians (Eng. Fusco, Benotti, and Fei), are responsible for speeding up the project's resolution; the design consortium; the successive project managers; the contractors Delta Lavori and PAN Pellegrino; and all the workers involved. Special thanks also go to Prof. Emilio Attinà, the Rector's Delegate for University Greenery, and the entire team of workers."

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by the Prefect, Dr. Clara Vaccaro, the Mayor, the Honorable Francesco Cannizzaro, and the Vicar of the Bishop, Monsignor Pasquale Catanese. After the ceremony, thanks to the Mayor and ATAM's cooperation, participants toured the entire route on an open-top bus. The tour continued at the construction site of the Department of Agriculture's new laboratories, currently under construction.

For the completion of a further short but important section, intended to further improve access to the University Campus, discussions are underway, facilitated by Senator Minasi, with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The ceremony was attended by the university community, along with numerous civil, military, political, and academic authorities, representing the main local institutions: a participation that testifies to the importance of this project for the future of the Università Mediterranea and the development of the Reggio Calabria region.
