The Forestiadi of Silviculture: the Università Mediterranea takes center stage in Vallombrosa.
On May 11 and 12, 2026, in the heart of the Tuscan Apennines, an experience of enormous educational value for Forestry and Environmental Sciences students from all over Italy took place: the fourth edition of the Forestiadi di Silvicoltura, hosted in the historic setting of Vallombrosa, a symbolic place of national forestry culture and the cradle of Forestry Sciences, where the first Italian forestry school was founded.
Representing the Department of Agriculture at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria with enthusiasm and expertise was a large group of students from the Forestry and Environmental Sciences program, accompanied by Professors Pasquale Marziliano and Silvio Bagnato.
The Forestiadi are increasingly representing a highly significant event for the education of students in silviculture and forest management. More than a simple competition, it is a truly immersive experience of discussion, collaboration, and professional growth, bringing together students from all Italian universities specializing in forestry sciences.
During the days of activities, students had the opportunity to discuss concrete forest management topics, taking on practical tests and technical and scientific discussions related to modern forestry and environmental sustainability. This experience allows them to integrate the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom with fieldwork, developing observation, analysis, and teamwork skills.
The human and academic dimension of the event was particularly significant: opportunities like this allow students to build relationships with colleagues from all over Italy, share diverse educational experiences, and meet professors and researchers from other universities, broadening their cultural and professional knowledge.
Among the most moving moments of the 2026 edition was the presence of Professor Piero Piussi, an absolute reference point for generations of forestry professionals. His book on General Silviculture has trained thousands of Italian forestry professionals. For the students in attendance, meeting one of the masters of the discipline in person was a moment of great cultural and emotional value.
The Forestiadi experience also brought significant success to Mediterranea students. A student from the University of Reggio Calabria was part of the team that placed first overall, contributing to the overall victory, while another Mediterranea student was part of the team that placed third. This result demonstrates the quality of the students' preparation in the Department of Agriculture and the effectiveness of the educational program offered by Mediterranea University in the forestry sector.
Participation in the fourth edition of the Forestiadi confirms the active role of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria in training new generations of forestry professionals capable of addressing the challenges of sustainable land management, environmental protection, and adaptation to climate change.
Experiences like this demonstrate how university education can become a concrete opportunity for personal growth, national debate, and the building of a young, knowledgeable, and passionate scientific community, ready to protect and enhance Italy's forestry heritage.
