Biotechnology for Sustainability: Mediterranea's new degree program
Environmental biotechnology, industrial innovation, medical sciences, artificial intelligence, and land conservation. These are not distant worlds, but the beating heart of the new educational offerings of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.
Rector Giuseppe Zimbalatti has officially presented the flagship program of the new academic year: the three-year degree program in Biotechnology for Sustainability (Class L-2R). This innovative program responds directly to the most recent ministerial reforms. The curriculum is designed to train future professionals in ecological transition, global health, bioinformatics, and AI applied to biotechnology. The open-access program offers a perfect balance of theoretical lectures and hands-on laboratory work and is aimed at those who wish to transform their passion for biological sciences into concrete solutions for protecting the planet and fostering the economic development of Calabria.
Furthermore, the new degree program offers students the opportunity to leverage the knowledge acquired during the transition semester of medical school. Candidates will be able to convert their efforts into a professionally-oriented program, without losing the academic year and with materials that are immediately applicable to the job market. The true revolution of this program lies in its profound interdisciplinary and digital focus, defined as the "Bio-Digital approach."
Alongside a solid traditional scientific background, the University of Stretto introduces cutting-edge disciplines tailored to the demands of the green job market:
Digital Integration: The curriculum includes the new course "Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence for Biotechnology," essential for applying predictive models to ecosystem protection.
Hybrid skills: a synergistic training program that connects mathematics, physics, chemistry, and molecular genetics with computer science for processing and managing complex biological data. Intensive hands-on experience: hundreds of hours dedicated to laboratory work and experimental internships at research centers or leading companies in the biotechnology, medical, and pharmaceutical sectors.
The training program provides for the acquisition of 180 credits in total, distributed over a three-year period:
- First Year (The Basics): consolidation of the basic scientific subjects, including mathematics, physics, general and organic chemistry, general genetics and elements of cellular biology.
- Second Year (The Immersion): Focus on biochemistry, physiology, general microbiology, and molecular biology. Special attention will be given to environmental bioremediation, the study of agri-food microbiota, and the bioinformatics management of genomic data.
- Third Year (The Avant-garde): specialization in industrial biotechnology (plants and processes for bioactive molecules), microbial biotechnology, applied artificial intelligence and a mandatory practical internship in a company.
The global biotechnology market is rapidly expanding both in Italy and Europe. Graduates of the L-2R program at the Università Mediterranea will be able to quickly enter key sectors such as the Green & Circular Economy (bioplastic development and environmental monitoring), the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, the agri-food sector, and bioinformatics.
The title enables strategic and immediately recognizable professional figures:
- Environmental Biotechnologist: Expert in designing bioremediation systems to remediate contaminated sites and manage waste.
- Biochemical and chemical laboratory technician: Quality control professional in industrial sectors oriented towards bio-based products.
- Freelancer: Upon passing the state exam, access to the National Register of Biologists (Section B) is guaranteed.
Enrollment for the 2026/27 academic year is officially open on the University of Reggio Calabria website.
