The Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria is gaining ground on the national academic scene, increasingly becoming a point of reference and attraction for many young Calabrians, and beyond.
An important recognition comes from the Censis ranking of Italian universities (2026/2027 edition): the University of Reggio Calabria, led by Rector Professor Giuseppe Zimbalatti, ranks third in the overall ranking of state universities (up to 10,000 students), a significant leap forward that allows it to gain three spots compared to last year. This move from sixth to third place is thanks to growth in many indicators, including its leadership in Italy (with a score of 110) for the number of scholarships awarded and its second place for facilities (with 102 points). Further qualifying the University of Reggio Calabria and representing another strength is its excellent results in employability, with a significant increase (80 points) compared to last year, in services, and in internationalization.
Particularly significant results have also been achieved in many individual degree courses, including three-year, master's, and single-cycle master's degrees.
" We are particularly pleased ," admits Rector Professor Giuseppe Zimbalatti , " because these data clearly reflect the heart of our institutional commitment: to strengthen, particularly in an area like ours, the role of university education as a tool for scientific and cultural growth and social advancement. This awareness ," explains Rector Zimbalatti, " has always been part of ours and has fostered an increasingly inclusive academic community, providing opportunities for every single student, because our goal is to ensure no one is ever left behind. Over the years, we have guaranteed scholarships to all eligible students, awarding 2,190 scholarships to approximately 5,700 enrolled students in the last academic year, a figure exceeding 35% of the University's student population ."
Rector Zimbalatti added, " Investment in student housing and spaces is also rewarded, including through the redevelopment of the Monfortani complex, which will house beds, social areas, and sports facilities, fostering social interaction and community spirit ."
Zimbalatti concludes , " In a historical moment like this, marked by such complex challenges, universities are called upon to keep pace with the times, offering adequate responses to the new needs and demands of their local communities and the labor market. In such a dynamic scenario, these data certainly represent an important starting point for the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria—which I am honored to lead—to increase competitiveness in the university system, paying ever deeper and more careful attention to our young people. The goal, and the rapidly growing enrollment figures in recent years give us hope, is that more and more young people will choose our university and also choose to stay in their homeland, in an increasingly university-oriented city. With the knowledge that they can count on a cutting-edge educational offering and a qualification that will be valuable in the labor market ."
