AgrariaUniRC plays a leading role in protecting biodiversity: the BioBlitz in Ferruzzano
The Department of Agriculture at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria reaffirms its role as a scientific and cultural hub in the region by actively participating in the BioBlitz – Citizen Science event held in April in Mastro Nicola, Ferruzzano.
The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Reggio Calabria Naturalistic Group and the Italian Botanical Society, saw the Department at the forefront of promoting awareness and protection of Calabria's natural heritage.
Together with the Botany and Entomology groups from the Department of Agriculture, they guided the participants, providing immediate scientific feedback on the observed species. Thanks to the expertise of the professors and researchers, it was possible to identify rare flora, specimens of tree frogs, edible frogs, and the precious Apennine toad tadpoles. Through the use of digital technologies and dedicated apps, the Department is coordinating the development of a scientific checklist for the area, transforming citizen observations into validated data available to the entire scientific community. This activity demonstrates the commitment to transferring academic knowledge beyond the university classroom, involving professionals and enthusiasts in a process of "participatory science" that enriches the region.
The results of this important monitoring activity are available on the project's dedicated page: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/ferruzzano-bioblitz-18-aprile ".
