Ferdinando De Giorgi, head coach of the Italian volleyball team, concludes "Universities Revealed" at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.
The week-long "Universities Revealed" event, promoted by the CRUI (Conference of Italian University Rectors) to mark National University Day, concluded in the Aula Magna "A. Quistelli." The closing event, which opened the doors of the Università Mediterranea to the public from March 19th to 26th, featured Ferdinando De Giorgi, Head Coach of the World Champion Men's National Volleyball Team.
The Italian national coach presented his book "Egoisti di Squadra," a work that explores the balance between individual talent and team cohesion, offering insights applicable to both sports and academic and professional life. The meeting, introduced by Domenico Panuccio, President of the Reggio Calabria National Football Team (FIPAV), was attended by Rector Giuseppe Zimbalatti and Vice-Rector for Orientation, Professor Rossella Marzullo.
The "Università Svelate" initiative represented an important showcase for the University of Reggio Calabria's educational offerings and research. Through a week packed with workshops, seminars, and orientation activities, the University successfully presented itself to the community, engaging students, families, and citizens.
Rector Giuseppe Zimbalatti expressed great satisfaction with the outcome of the initiative: "'Università Svelate' has represented a fundamental bridge between the University and the local community. The success in terms of participation confirms the central role of the Università Mediterranea as a cultural, sporting, and social engine for the city of Reggio Calabria. Closing this week with a symbol of excellence and values like Ferdinando De Giorgi is the best message we could send to our young people ."
With this event, the Università Mediterranea reaffirms its commitment to promoting a comprehensive education, where the culture of study intertwines with the healthy values of sport and social interaction.
And it was a true life lesson that Ferdinando De Giorgi shared with the rich audience of the Università Mediterranea : authorities, young people, and athletes. A magnifying glass on the failures and defeats that are part of success. "Sport is the most effective educational tool there is; it teaches how to win and how to rebound, and it fosters a sense of belonging. Learning from defeat," De Giorgi emphasizes, "is learning to start over. Sport has this extraordinary prerogative, and mistakes must be handled correctly: a transition that must be overcome but which is not an expression of incompetence ." And again—in a world where "likes," the weight of expectations, and the judgment of society count—Ferdinando De Giorgi, speaking with Rector Zimbalatti and Vice-Rector Marzullo, recalls the moments of glory experienced and glimpses of the daily life of a boy who later becomes a champion. The challenge is to celebrate with sobriety and depress with courage," underlines the commissioner, quoting a significant passage from his book. And there are many lessons he leaves to the students of the University of Reggio: the encouragement to believe in their own talent and imperfection to achieve a valuable goal and again - at the suggestion of the rector Zimbalatti - the pride of their southern roots and of values acquired in the family and which are the basis of relationships between people .
