Presentation of the book "Aspromonte Herds: Pastoralism and Landscape in Africo"
The international commitment to the study of traditional Aspromonte pastoralism continues with the presentation of the book " Greggi d'Aspromonte: Pastorizia e Paesaggio ad Africo" (Sheep herding in Aspromonte: Pastoralism and Landscape in Africo) , edited by Francesco Carrer and Alfonso Picone Chiodo, produced as part of the PLAS project, promoted by Newcastle University. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 4:00 PM in the "Francesco Saverio Nesci" Seminar Room of the Department of Agriculture at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.
The event will be moderated by Professor Giuseppe Bombino and will feature presentations by Professor Francesco Carrer, project leader, and Professors Andrea Rosario Proto and Pasquale Antonio Marziliano, both professors and coordinators of the Forestry and Environmental Sciences degree programs.
The presentation will provide an opportunity to illustrate the research conducted in recent years in the Africo Vecchio area, where archaeology, environmental history, and pastoral testimonies intertwine, with the aim of understanding the evolution of the Aspromonte mountain landscapes.
The day will conclude with an open debate and testimonials from research participants, to explore the role of pastoralism in the sustainable management of inland areas.
