Università Mediterranea leads international study on normal-pressure hydrocephalus
The Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria confirms its position as a center of excellence in translational research applied to medicine. The study "Diagnostic Accuracy of the Relative Subcortical Atrophy Index in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus" was recently published in the prestigious scientific journal Neurosurgery, marking a fundamental step forward in the diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, a complex form of treatable dementia.
The research, led by Dr. Francesco Signorelli (Policlinico Gemelli in Rome) with the contribution of Dr. Giovanni Pennisi (San Giovanni Addolorata Hospital) and Dr. Placido Bruzzaniti (San Carlo Hospital in Milan), introduces an innovative radiological index.
The scientific validation of this parameter and the development of a novel hydraulic model to explain the etiopathogenesis of the disease were made possible thanks to the crucial contribution of the DICEAM Department of the Università Mediterranea , represented by its Director, Prof. Giuseppe Barbaro, and Engineer Lucia Bruzzaniti.
The scientific value of the research, which follows the successes achieved in 2023 in Scientific Reports in collaboration with "La Sapienza," will be the focus of the 65th National Congress of Hospital Neurological Sciences (SNO), which will be held in Reggio Calabria from June 3 to 6, 2026, in the Quistelli Aula Magna of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria . The event, titled "A Bridge between Neurosciences," connects the different facets of neuroscience, addressing topics ranging from emergency neurology to neurosurgery and neuroradiology, confirming the city and its university as a strategic hub for the European neuroscientific debate. fico europeo.
