The Rector of the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, Prof. Giuseppe Zimbalatti, in 2023 started the process for joining the University Corridors for Refugees (UNICORE 6.0) project promoted by UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, proposed by Prof. Paola Raffa, Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair “Mediterranean Landscape in Context of Emergency” active at the Mediterranean University since 2021.

The project, which was joined by the Diocesan Caritas of Reggio Calabria with the director Maria Angela Ambrogio and the vice director Don Antonino Russo, the Next ODV association of Reggio Calabria of the president Ernesto Romeo and the local branch of Banca Etica represented by Simona Spagna, has allowed the procedures foreseen to be started, for the reception of three students from the African continent.

Following the evaluation of the qualifications and an online interview from their countries, he selected three students from Sudan and South Sudan with refugee status in Uganda.

The selection process took place from the publication of the Unicore 6.0 Call in March 2024 until November, the month in which the students were enrolled and began their studies at the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.
