Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria opposes violence in all its forms and modalities.
The Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria has always placed the utmost emphasis on democratic processes for the development of culture, freedom, values, traditions, and respect for diverse thought, religion, and identities. It promotes friendship among all peoples and never forgets that true peace is always the fruit of justice; it is not just a value, an idea, or a form of coexistence, but the first and foremost condition for freedom, cultures, religions, ideas, traditions, and identities, while any kind of conflict negates them.
The Mediterranean University is convinced that without peace, every plural is destined to become first singular, then self-destructive silence. For this reason, it abhors violence in any form or modality , denies its potential to serve any realistic purpose in resolving conflicts, and denounces its exclusively destructive nature. On this basis, aware of the responsibility for the mission that history has assigned to institutions of higher learning and their members, the Mediterranean University views with dismay and sincere anguish the acts of violence taking place throughout the world, especially those that have been ongoing for far too long in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Convinced as it is that violence only produces more violence and that the reasons for peace must be built not only with words but with concrete political, legal and economic actions of peace, the Università Mediterranea :
- expresses its closeness to all those who, at this moment and in the past months and years, have suffered acts of abuse that humiliate the human condition in every aspect;
- she witnesses, speechless, the unspeakable massacre taking place in the Gaza Strip and the slaughter of innocents that is being carried out there;
- severely condemns the inhumane conditions in which an entire population is forced;
- expresses grave concern about the dramatic condition of that territory, almost two years after the beginning of the military operations launched by Israel in response to the criminal actions perpetrated by Hamas against unarmed Israeli citizens on 7 October 2023;
- Expresses deep indignation and firm condemnation of the very serious, repeated and intolerable violations of human rights, international law and international humanitarian law committed by the Israeli authorities in Gaza, which include indiscriminate bombing and the blockade of humanitarian aid;
- also condemns , with equal severity, the unjustified failure by Hamas to release the Israeli hostages;
- calls for and hopes for an end to the bombings, atrocities and kidnappings, which prevent dialogue and the possibility of finding solutions to the conflict;
- calls for the immediate opening of humanitarian corridors to guarantee the right to life for all people in difficulty and danger;
- calls for recognition of the right to have rights for people of all ages, religions, cultures, and citizenships, who are deprived of their future, imprisoned in the timeless present of violence that excludes all freedom;
- calls for every necessary initiative to be taken at national, European, and international levels to protect the rights of the Palestinian people as well as the Israeli people, by combating the unlawful actions committed and reaffirming the principles of human rights and international law;
- is committed to studying concrete actions to welcome teachers and students from Palestinian universities who are currently completely prevented from carrying out their functions.
