Specific Educational Objectives of the Course
The Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology for Sustainability (BS) will provide a broad-based education in the various fields of biology and applied biology, integrating it with a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, genetics, computer science, and bioinformatics. This approach is intended to foster the broad cultural openness of Biotechnology graduates, an essential requirement for successful careers in the evolving technological and biotechnological landscape. The program's curriculum aims to provide graduates with a foundation of basic knowledge as well as skills related to the scientific disciplines characterizing the Biology and Biotechnology fields. The curriculum also includes the subject "Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence for Biotechnology," based on the methodological foundation of AI based on Neural Networks. Graduates in Biotechnology for Sustainability will be able to express their multiple and diverse skills in the various fields of biotechnology, having developed:
- adequate basic knowledge of biological systems, from a molecular and cellular perspective;
- cultural and methodological foundations for understanding biotechnological innovations, with particular reference to all omics and bioinformatics technologies, systems biology, and genome editing applied to the study and use of living organisms;
- knowledge of regulation, responsibility and bioethics, as well as economics and business management of biotechnological applications.
Professional figures (ISTAT codes):
- Biotechnologist (2.3.1.1.4.)
- Biochemical laboratory technician (3.2.2.3.1)
- Chemical Technician (3.1.1.2.0)
Career opportunities
Graduates in Biotechnology for Sustainability will be able to carry out technical and operational professional activities, using biological systems and genetic engineering techniques for applications in various production sectors, including agri-food, environmental, chemical, medical, pharmaceutical, and veterinary sectors, where they can perform the following activities:
- integrated use of biological technologies with the use of living organisms and/or parts thereof to obtain innovative products in various production sectors;
- biological, analytical control and validation of the aforementioned processes and products;
- operation and maintenance of biotechnology plants;
- certification of products that have undergone genetic modification, ensuring their results, purpose, quality, and biosafety, and evaluating their socio-environmental impact;
- biotechnology research activities in the various production sectors, for the purpose of obtaining goods or services;
- use of IT and bioinformatics tools to analyze data obtained from research and analyses characterizing the biotechnologist's activity;
- the activity of marketing products obtained from research or production activities involving biotechnological processes or methodologies.
