Recognition of activities abroad

The Department of Excellence DIIES (Department of Information, Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Engineering) encourages international student mobility, in accordance with the procedures clarified from time to time in the call for applications and in accordance with the Università Mediterranea Regulations for the recognition of credits earned abroad (Home-International-Erasmus+).

International mobility is a means of cultural exchange and integration into their personal and professional development, leading to the attainment of a degree. It may recognize study periods undertaken at foreign universities, within the framework of bilateral agreements established by the Erasmus Program, as a training tool similar to that offered by the Department, provided the student's commitment is equal and the content consistent with the study program.

The choice of training activities to be undertaken abroad must be aimed at acquiring knowledge and skills consistent with the educational objectives of the respective degree program. This choice is reflected in a table of correspondence between the training activities of the two institutions, in the learning agreement.

The Learning Agreement is the document that defines the training activities to be undertaken abroad and which will replace some of the activities planned for the relevant degree program.

It establishes, in advance, a number of credits equivalent to the aforementioned activities, proportional to the length of stay abroad (indicatively, 60 credits for a year, 30 for a semester, 20 for a trimester), and must be drawn up by the student and checked by the Department's Erasmus delegate.

At the end of the study period, the Degree Programme Council, upon proposal by the Departmental Erasmus Delegate and based on the results achieved and adequately documented by the foreign university (via the Transcript of Records), recognizes the educational activity undertaken abroad both with regard to the credits acquired at the foreign university and the grade achieved.

For each exam, the Degree Programme Council assigns a grade corresponding to the merit grade obtained abroad. In this regard, the provisions set forth below apply, with a view to the full implementation of the ECTS-USER-GUIDE-2015 (and subsequent documents).

In relation to the internationalization of teaching, outcoming and incoming students can undertake teaching experiences to complete their degree thesis.

In particular, without prejudice to the obligation to evaluate each case individually (also in relation to the specific teaching regulations):

- Outgoing students can usually carry out educational activities abroad to achieve their degree thesis, to be completed at the Department, and to be recognized, if necessary, in training activities foreseen by the relevant degree program.

Incoming students can usually undertake training activities at the Department leading to their thesis, which must be completed at their home institution. These activities may include, in addition to curricular activities, training experiences at university laboratories and spin-offs.

All specifics regarding admission and language requirements, destination countries, duration of the period abroad, activities permitted and prohibited during the period abroad, financial contributions, and procedures for students admitted to mobility are included in the calls for applications for the various Erasmus mobility grants.

Important elements to consider are contained in the Teaching Regulations.

For the recognition of activities carried out abroad, the Department of Excellence DIIES (Department of Information, Infrastructure and Sustainable Energy Engineering) is inspired by the criteria established by the European Commission's European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) (ECTS Guidelines 2015), taking into account the compatibility of the study programs and learning outcomes achieved abroad with those required by the respective degree program.

One ECTS credit corresponds to one University Training Credit (CFU).

To obtain recognition of their training activities, mobility beneficiaries must request a final transcript of records (or transcript of records) from the host university. This transcript must include the results of the training activities undertaken, including exams taken and the corresponding results and credits.

Training activities undertaken abroad must be consistent with the Learning Agreement prepared and approved before departure and/or with any changes made during the mobility period.

Activities undertaken that do not appear in the Learning Agreement or any variation thereof may not benefit from recognition.

As per the ECTS Guide, “each institution must provide – in addition to the description of its national/institutional grading system – a table of the statistical distribution of positive grades awarded in the course of study or in the subject area attended by the student (grade distribution table)”.

Pending receipt of the statistical distribution tables of grades, for the credit recognition procedures, the DIIES Department, unless otherwise specified or possible, in the generic case of expression on a local scale (not ECTS) of the grades assigned by the foreign university, refers to the linear interpolation technique.
