Laboratories

Pursuant to Article 2, paragraph 3 of Ministerial Decree 363/1998, laboratories are considered places or environments where teaching, research, or service activities are carried out that involve the use of machinery, apparatus, and work equipment, systems, prototypes, or other technical means, or chemical, physical, or biological agents. 

Laboratories are also considered to be places or environments where activities are carried out outside the built-up area of ​​the headquarters - such as, for example, archaeological, geological, or maritime campaigns.

Instrumental Research Laboratories are considered those places within which one or more professors, organized in one or more RUs, carry out their research activities through the use of machines, apparatus and work equipment, systems, prototypes or other technical means, or chemical, physical or biological agents, aimed, in terms of example but not limited to, the execution of experiments, numerical simulations or other technical products of calculation, analysis, calibration, testing, controls and/or official certification of technical results.

Description: 

The laboratory conducts teaching, research, and development activities in the field of electromagnetic fields, with a particular emphasis on solving inverse problems in applied electromagnetics. These include:

  • solving electromagnetic scattering problems using state-of-the-art non-ionizing radiation for biomedical diagnostics and therapy with applications including brain imaging, breast tumor detection and treatment, oncological hyperthermia, and maximizing magnetic resonance imaging performance;
  • the design of high-performance antennas for aerospace engineering applications (including satellite telecommunications antennas and radio telescopes for deep-space observation), defense (including advanced targeting systems for missile systems, stealth aircraft technologies, and next-generation radar systems) and remote sensing;
  • the synthesis of intelligent and reconfigurable microwave devices based on appropriately engineered metamaterials through the 'inverse design' paradigm (including Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with applications ranging from radio wave transmission optimization to smart living and the Internet of Things).

The laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge equipment including a vector network analyzer, a ground penetrating radar, various kits for building antennas for teaching and research purposes, and several latest-generation workstations with high computing power.

Description:

The Electronics Laboratory is a research and teaching laboratory dedicated primarily to students enrolled in the Bachelor's Degree in Computer, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering and the Master's Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and, starting from the 2025/26 academic year, in the Bachelor's Degree in Electronic and Biomedical Engineering and the Master's Degree in Electronic and Biomedical Engineering.

It is equipped with all the necessary equipment to allow students to concretely approach electronic design and the subsequent creation and testing of analog and digital electronic circuits.

The main ongoing research activities can be traced back to the following:

1) Ultrasonic localization for gesture interfaces, indoor navigation, robotics and healthcare.

2) Circuits and systems for improving the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic and wind power plants.

3) Edge Machine Learning: system and circuit architectures for artificial intelligence on microdevices.

4) RFID architectures, circuits and systems.

5) Energy harvesting systems from light or radio frequency sources.

6) Design of microcontroller-based wireless sensors.

7) Study and design of high-performance optoelectronic devices.

 

All research lines involve activities ranging from the study and development of theoretical bases, to simulation, up to the creation and characterization of prototypes.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including several multi-channel digital oscilloscopes, benchtop power supplies and signal generators, logic analyzers, a network analyzer, a semiconductor curve tracer, a Vicon 3D localization system, a climate-controlled cell, metallurgical microscopes, soldering stations, analog and digital circuit prototyping equipment and materials, etc.

Description:

The researchers in the Microelectronics Laboratory possess expertise in various fields of electronics, microelectronics, and silicon photonics. The research team's studies range from analyzing the compatibility of silicon fabrication processes to the development of innovative photonic devices for fiber-optic telecommunications systems, from characterizing the electro-optical properties of new materials to designing new components and circuits for managing large electrical power.

The main activities currently underway can be traced back to the following:

 

1) High-performance optical modulators based on Graphene.

2) CMOS integrated circuits and neuromorphic architectures.

3) New power devices and circuits: study, design, and experimental characterization of electronic components based on wide-gap semiconductors for power applications, and experimental analysis of the characteristics of static energy conversion circuits. Specific applications: electric cars, grid integration of energy produced by photovoltaic and wind power plants.

4) CMOS Photonics: Integration of photonic functions on conventional microchips. In particular, study of the optoelectronic properties of silicon and design of light modulators compatible with CMOS technology.

 

The Microelectronics Laboratory is also used for internships and for preparing undergraduate and graduate theses.

The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including a 3D laser scanning confocal microscope, several telecommunications lasers, a microchip probe station, and a microchip bonding station.

Description:

The Laboratory of Mathematical and Numerical Methods for Engineering promotes the development and application of mathematical models and advanced numerical tools to address complex problems in engineering and technology fields. Research activities, conducted by an interdisciplinary team from the scientific disciplines of Area 01 – Mathematical and Computer Sciences, develop along theoretical and applied lines of research, with particular attention to:

· data approximation and analysis;

· analytical and numerical methods for optimization;

· study of graphs and networks;

· data encryption and security;

· computational harmonic analysis and digital signal processing.

The laboratory works in synergy with national (INdAM Groups: GNCS, GNAMPA, GNSAGA; RITA “Italian Approximation Network”) and international research groups, and is involved in several research projects funded at regional, national and European level.

Description: 

The Laboratory promotes the development and application of mathematical models and advanced numerical tools for the study and management of complex distributed systems, with the primary goal of proposing innovative solutions for their protection. Research activities are conducted by an interdisciplinary team and develop along theoretical and applied lines of research, with particular attention to:

 • social network analysis;

 • cyber security; 

• variational and probabilistic models; 

• data approximation and analysis;

 • analytical and numerical methods for optimization.

 The laboratory works in synergy with national (INdAM Groups: GNAMPA, GNCS) and international research groups, and is involved in several nationally funded research projects.

Description: 

The laboratory's objectives are related to research, teaching and third-party work.

The laboratory, which focuses on transportation infrastructure engineering, is inspired by the primacy and importance of scientific independence and work. These aspects are reflected in its competitiveness and scientific production on the international stage.

 In terms of certifications , the laboratory belongs, in particular, to the EA activity sector 34 (European Accreditation) and has been certified ISO 9001:2015.

The Laboratory has to its credit:

  • Numerous theses developed (bachelor's, master's, master's, doctorate);
  • Many third-party orders;
  • Numerous national and international research projects.

The laboratory's equipment  includes tools for performing standard and advanced tests on bituminous binders, stone aggregates, bituminous mixtures, road surfaces, and soil, both on site and in the laboratory. 

The main research areas concern the following topics: 

  • fundamental and empirical quantities for the estimation of the mechanical contribution of the sub-bases, 
  • hot and cold recycling of bituminous conglomerates, 
  • volumetric approach to the design of bituminous mixtures, 
  • use of innovative and/or waste materials in road, railway or airport structures, 
  • innovative quantities and instruments for the analysis of the functional properties of the street plan, 
  • mechanistic approaches to superstructural sizing, 
  • finite element analysis and experimental validations, 
  • quantities and instruments for the survey and monitoring of parameters that influence the safety of different modes of transport and in particular road transport, 
  • impact on freight transport infrastructure (particularly hazardous, hazmat), 
  • “special” bituminous conglomerates (with optimised surface, acoustic or volumetric performance, etc.), 
  • “clear” surface treatments, 
  • life cycle analysis and life cycle costing, 
  • applications of artificial intelligence to transport infrastructure,
  • Sensors for non-destructive structural monitoring,
  • Smart roads for autonomous vehicles.
