DiGiES Third Mission
Delegate for the Third Mission: Prof. Maria Sammarro
The University's traditional responsibilities include research, i.e., the deepening of knowledge, and teaching, i.e., the transmission of knowledge. For some years now, it has sought to develop a further mission that stems from these first two, research and teaching, and which is both their expression and synthesis: dialogue with society aimed at providing a contribution that can have a more direct and immediate impact on it. This third mission is referred to as the "Third Mission."
With respect to this Third Mission, the Università Mediterranea is committed and involved in a pioneering way, having made this commitment to society from the very beginning and in its very constitution, right from its very foundation. In the first article of its bylaws, it establishes as its founding purpose the ethical, civil, cultural, and economic growth of the Calabrian region and the nation.
In undertaking this commitment, the DiGiES scientific community cannot fail to feel primarily and directly involved, also given the specificity of its humanistic focus, which encompasses the diverse yet contiguous areas of law, economics, and the social sciences; a significant portion, therefore, of the thematic spheres capable of effectively and directly influencing and shaping the social fabric.
In this context, the Department believes it can increasingly provide a specific line of action capable of converting knowledge into wisdom. This means that knowledge, a third party impartial but not neutral with respect to the challenges of a complex society, can be made available to the community, simultaneously as a stimulus and a source of comfort. This action can stimulate but also assist in the processes that necessarily merit the qualified support of scientific research and its practitioners.
In this way, DiGiES sees as its goal not only the third mission but the mission of knowledge as an impartial and interested third party committed to the application of knowledge and wisdom; a mission aimed at improving the community through the cultural contribution that knowledge makes in the concreteness of legal measures, economic action, and social substance, the unity of which constructively shapes the spirit of society and the community.
Very briefly, these are the reasons why we need to work in a coordinated manner and specifically identify the necessarily multiple and diverse activities being undertaken. A logo has thus been developed to distinguish the initiatives to be included in a comprehensive program, thus presenting the multiplicity of individual initiatives within the unity of the mission, and the commitment of individual scholars and their lines of action within the unified mission.
The following subpages contain a list of activities, divided into categories. This list uses the "Department Events and Third Mission Activities" electronic archive, created as a stable monitoring and data collection structure.
