Equal opportunities

In accordance with ministerial guidelines, the Università Mediterranea promotes Equal Opportunities (EO), aimed at guaranteeing everyone equal conditions for participation in academic life and providing the tools necessary for inclusion in economic, political, and social life, regardless of gender, religion and personal beliefs, race and ethnic origin, disability, age, or sexual orientation.

At the Università Mediterranea, a coordination group consisting of the University Delegate for Equal Opportunities and departmental delegates actively works to promote and implement a series of positive actions regarding equal opportunities (PO), starting with gender and social inclusion.

Activity

Activity

  • November 25, 2022 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The University of Reggio Calabria has organized several initiatives to raise awareness and reflect on the issue.
    • On the evening of November 24, the Università Mediterranea was illuminated in orange, a symbol of a future without violence.
    • On November 25th, "red shoes" will be installed in various buildings at the University of Reggio Calabria, to remember the victims of femicide and to say no to all forms of discrimination and violence.
    • Presentation of a video created with the involvement of the University's students .
  • From 01/05/2017 to 30/04/2021 Project “Gender Equality in Engineering through Communication and Commitment” (GEECCO), funded by the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program ( http://www.geecco.unirc.it/ ).
  • November 25, 2021 - "A Red Bench at the University." A red bench was inaugurated at the University Campus's Towers complex as a symbol and warning against gender-based violence in all its forms and against all forms of discrimination. The initiative, promoted by the Università Mediterranea's Single Guarantee Committee (CUG), aims to raise awareness among younger generations by placing the symbol of "non-violence against women" right inside the University, a primary place for the educational and cultural growth of students.
  • November 23, 2020 - United against Violence against Women. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, the Mediterranean University joins the initiative, reaffirming its commitment to combating all forms of discrimination and violence against women, which continues to be a serious and unacceptable obstacle to the enjoyment of women's rights and their full personal fulfillment. Twenty-five years after the historic Beijing Declaration on Women's Rights, this warning comes at a time when we are witnessing an increase in cases of violence against women worldwide due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic.
The Università Mediterranea is actively engaged in this issue at various levels, contributing through:
    - training (for both students and professionals)
    - research
    - data collection
    - third mission and internationalization
    - valorization and promotion of best practices
, as demonstrated by the University's activities from 2016 to 2019, which were monitored by the Single Guarantee Committee of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.
  • Awareness campaign against violence against women in the time of coronavirus
  • October 13-October 27, 2020 Questionnaire on Gender Equality - A Survey on Gender Equality in the Mediterranean
  • February 11, 2020 - International Day of Women in Science. This event was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2015 and sponsored by UNESCO. The goal is to increase the number of girls studying science and reduce dropouts during their studies, to have more women in laboratories, universities, and research institutes, and, more generally, to increase the percentage of women in high-level positions. Over the past 15 years, significant global efforts have been made to engage women in science, but gender biases and stereotypes persist, keeping girls and women away from the scientific world. The numbers reflect this gap eloquently: less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women, and only 30% of girls choose a scientific major in higher education. Events are planned around the world to mark this day. The Università Mediterranea dedicates this day to all the women and girls who work at our University with passion, perseverance, and commitment, in diverse professional roles. Having overcome difficulties, having believed in themselves, and having succeeded even in fields not traditionally reserved for women, should serve not only as an inspiration but also as a valid example.
