Double Degree

Double Degree: what is it and how does it work?

Double Degree, or bi-national degree, refers to an integrated study programme aimed at obtaining a double degree abroad: thanks to an agreement between two or more universities, students from all over Italy can attend an international academic institution for 1 or 2 years. In order for the double degree to be recognised, the universities in question must have previously reached bilateral agreements comparing the academic curricula of the institutions involved. The classes and examinations to be taken are generally in the language spoken at the host foreign university. At the end of the studies, two degrees, called double degrees, are obtained.

The Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria has signed a double degree agreement with Ain Shams University in Cairo, initiating the ‘Programme with structured student mobility and double degree awarding’ in Architecture.

This agreement involves the Department of Architecture and Design (dAeD) of the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria and the Faculty of Engineering of Ain Shams University in Cairo, representing an important action of internationalisation of the ‘Master's Degree Course in Architecture’ offered by our university. The agreement offers students and the academic community in both countries an interesting international training opportunity, with significant personal and professional benefits.

The study courses involved in the DDP agreement are:

for the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria (UNIRC):

the single-cycle Degree Course in Architecture (LM-04 c.u.);
for the Ain Shams University of Cairo (ASU):

Degree Course in Architecture Engineering - Landscape Architecture Program;
Degree Course in Architecture Engineering - Environmental Architecture Program;
Degree Course in Architecture Engineering - Housing Architecture Program;
Degree Course in Architecture Engineering - Architecture Program.
At the end of their studies, students admitted to the programme will be awarded the following academic degrees from both universities:

Master's Degree in Architecture (LM-04 c.u.) from the dAeD Department of the UNIRC;
Degree in Architecture Engineering (Landscape Architecture Program, Environmental Architecture Program, Housing Architecture Program or Architecture Program) from the Faculty of Engineering of Ain Shams University (ASU) in Cairo.
and the Diploma Supplement will also be provided.

The requirements that students must meet in order to participate in the Double Degree Program are:

for students of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria (UNIRC):

they must be enrolled in the fourth or fifth year of the single-cycle Degree Course in Architecture (LM-04 c. u.);
for students of Ain Shams University in Cairo (ASU):

the 12 years of schooling;
have already completed the third year in the Degree Course in Architecture Engineering (Landscape Architecture Program, Environmental Architecture Program, Housing Architecture Program or Architecture Program).

The selection procedure is carried out by Ain Shams University in Cairo (ASU) which invites Egyptian students to participate in the ‘Call for Participants’. Subsequently, Ain Shams University in Cairo (ASU) transmits the list of nominated students to the Department of Architecture and Design (dAeD) of the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.

The office of the Department of Architecture and Design (dAeD), once the necessary checks have been carried out, will proceed to send a communication to the nominated students inviting them to submit a pre-enrolment application on the Universitaly portal and, at the same time, will transmit the list of nominated students to the International Relations Office.

The nominated students will proceed with the pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal through:

  • the filling in of the Personal Data Form, paying the utmost attention to the Name and Surname (all the names must be entered in the relative field ‘first name’, while the last name on one's identification document must be entered in the field “surname”);
  • the indication of the Course of Studies offered by the Università Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria, then the Master of Science in Architecture" and the relative curriculum (LM-04 c. u.);
  • passport photo;
  • copy of Passport;
  • copy of High School Diploma obtained in the country of origin;
  • copy of Italian Language Certificate B2;
  • Certificate of examinations taken relating to the first three years of studies at their university (ToR - Transcript of Records).

The International Relations office verifies what has been entered on Universitaly and contacts students in the event of additions. Only after the pre-enrolment application has been correctly completed will the office draw up the Letter of Eligibility for Enrolment, which must be signed by the Head of Department and uploaded onto the Universitaly portal. Finally, it will admit the student with RESERVE STATUS, validate and transmit the pre-enrolment application to the relevant diplomatic representation (Embassy/Consulate).

Once the student's pre-enrolment has been validated, he/she will ask the relevant diplomatic representation (Embassy/Consulate) for an appointment to issue the VISA.

Following the checks carried out by the relevant diplomatic representation (Embassy/Consulate) and having obtained the VISA, students can proceed to the next steps to reach the Università degli Studi ‘Mediterranea’ di Reggio Calabria.

Within 8 days of arriving in Reggio Calabria, students will proceed to fill in the ‘KIT’ necessary to apply for a residence permit.

At the Questura they will ask for the tax code.

With the receipt of the KIT and the tax code the student will go to UNIRC.

Pick up the “Permit to Stay” kit at one of the Poste Italiane offices (post office, choose here PT on the map) and enter all the data plus a revenue stamp (€16.00 fee).

Include in the kit

  • 1 copy of the passport complete with all pages;
  • 1 passport photo;
  • Copy of the Letter of Acceptance issued by our University, with the stamp and signature of the Embassy certifying the course of study to be followed;
  • Copy of the visa;
  • Copy of the health and accident insurance document, valid for the entire period of the residence permit;
  • Copy of the lease/rental contract of the accommodation where you will be living in Reggio Calabria for your studies;
  • A document certifying your financial sustainability;
  • Postal bulletin (included in the Kit) with which you will pay the residence permit fee of € 70.46.

    Present the Kit with all the enclosures at the Post Office, where you will be identified and will have to pay the relevant fee of € 30,00; you will be issued with a receipt specifying the date for your appointment at the Questura;

  • On the day of his/her presentation at the Questura, he/she will have to be provided with the photographs, will be called to the photographic procedures and will be fingerprinted.
  • In cases where the dossier/kit needs to be supplemented with further documentation, he/she will be informed by the Questura at the contact details indicated in the kit.
  • Upon presentation of the KIT, the Post Office will produce a receipt of delivery of the application for a residence permit, which is equivalent to the receipt of presentation of the dossier produced at the Questura and which, moreover, serves as proof of authorised presence in Italy.
  • The receipt must be attached to the Esse3 registration procedure, and must subsequently be supplemented with the residence permit.

The student must register in the Esse3 procedure.

Students will then be supported for ‘conditional’ enrolment in the course of study until their previous career and enrolment in the year indicated in the agreement are recognised.

Students will be required to pay the fees agreed in the agreement.

After payment, students are assigned a matriculation number:
a unique numeric identification code needed to carry out all paperwork (booking for exams, taking exams, etc.).

The matriculation number protects the student's privacy as it is used on public spaces (notice boards and web pages) in place of his or her data.
An institutional e-mail address is then generated (in the format [email protected]), which must be used to communicate with the University.
