The Department

History

The Faculty of Agriculture was established in 1982 within the University of Reggio Calabria but in 2013 the structure of the University was redesigned with the establishment of the Departments , including Agriculture.

In this context, the Department of Agriculture, with its 70 professors and researchers, with its International Research Doctorate in Agricultural, Food and Forestry Sciences and with the Masters that are activated annually, proposes itself as a consolidated scientific and training center of reference at a southern level, within a natural integrated research network, capable of involving also the other countries that overlook the Mediterranean.

The terms Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Food refer to the fields of educational and scientific interest of the Department of Agriculture and related initiatives.

These are concretely reflected in a renewed training, industrial research and experimental development offer, closely linked to the environment, the territory and the forestry, agri-food and rural production world.

Professional flexibility, specialization, development of research methods, data collection and processing and information are the aspects on which we focus in the training of the student and this is also thanks to the recent creation of new and very modern experimental and teaching laboratories. The goal is to provide a research and training service that is consistent with the needs and expectations of society and the labor market.

There are three main lines of study.

Studying Agriculture means deepening one's knowledge of cultivation, breeding, use and transformation techniques of land products, combining the quality of production with the protection of agricultural and forestry systems, the environment and human health.

Studying Forests and the Environment allows us to deepen our knowledge of forest ecosystems and the multifunctionality of the forest, to analyze technologies for the sustainable valorization of resources and to plan actions and interventions for the protection and safeguard of the territory and the rural landscape.

Studying Food means acquiring a holistic vision of the activities and problems related to the production and consumption of food products, to guarantee their safety, quality and hygiene and to reconcile economics and ethics in production, conservation, transformation and distribution.

A common feature of all three directions is the great attention dedicated to biological and naturalistic, economic and engineering aspects, as well as to the acquisition of basic knowledge also in the field of computer applications and foreign languages.

The scientific and educational offer, therefore, as a result of the consolidation of the process of rationalization and qualification of the educational paths, capable of combining the continuous evolution of research knowledge with the socio-economic changes that have occurred in society and in the labor market, as well as with the changes in global agri-food and forestry policy.

The Department of Agriculture is located in Feo di Vito in Reggio Calabria.
