The Department

The DIIES is characterized by a strong orientation towards the study and development of new methods and advanced skills in various engineering sectors, with a particular vocation for technological analysis and research activities based both on basic disciplines (mathematical, physical, chemical sciences, etc.) and on the interaction and integration of transversal skills in the specialist areas of Civil, Industrial and Information Engineering.

Technological innovation is, in fact, the determining factor of both research and teaching activities that the Department develops with cutting-edge methodologies and techniques, with obvious repercussions in terms of results: excellent teaching offerings, to the full advantage of the demands of the territory and the world of work, scientific and cultural integration between different areas of expertise, development of important synergies that derive from the innovative scope of action.

The study and analysis activity concerns some applicative aspects strongly linked to particularly important areas of intervention in today's society, from support to the quality of life to the production of safe, clean and efficient energy, from intelligent and eco-compatible transport to ICT technologies supporting an innovative, inclusive and safe society.

In full continuity with the commitment made in this direction over the years, in addition to the traditional, three-year and specialization study paths, the Department provides, on the basis of specifically established funds and purposes, Masters and Specialization Courses, both first and second level (for example, first level Masters for the purpose of connecting the master's degrees in the LM 27 and LM23 areas in the ITS and Smart Green and Lean Cities fields, as well as first and second level Masters connected to research projects of national importance, such as those already underway or approved in the Energy, Home Automation, Security areas). This is in order to enhance the synergies between the different areas of the Department for the training of specialists able to propose, design and manage innovative systems, based on the use of ICT, industrial and basic skills in real-time planning and management applications of complex systems for the city and the territory, such as, for example, transport networks and energy networks, in a smart, lean and green perspective. Particular attention is also given to the structural and infrastructural components.

The presence of a significant number of laboratories, grouped in a well-defined area, is a strong point of the DIIES, by virtue of the strong synergies resulting from joint activities between complementary research areas, which increases the potential in terms of planning and, therefore, opportunities for students and researchers.
The success achieved by several DIIES members in the PON phase II projects, concerning the establishment of mixed public-private laboratories and technological districts, will soon allow a significant strengthening of the structures dedicated to experimentation and the development of new areas dedicated to research.

CUN Areas

The CUN areas within which the Department is located are:
Area 01 - Mathematical and Computer Sciences
Area 02 - Physical Sciences
Area 08 - Civil Engineering and Architecture
Area 09 - Industrial and Information Engineering.
The prevalent CUN area, in numerical terms, is Area 09, but the presence of Area 08 and basic area personnel allows the Department to count on a wide range of skills to achieve its research and teaching objectives.
